TWAS-icipe Postgraduate Fellowship Programme

The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Nairobi, Kenya, and TWAS offer three fellowships per year to young scientists from developing countries (other than Kenya) who wish to undertake their PhD studies in Kenya.

Programme Details

  • SANDWICH Fellowships (for those registered for a PhD in a developing country): The Fellowship may be granted for a minimum period of 6 months and a maximum period of 12 months.
  • FULL-TIME Fellowships (for those not registered for a PhD in their home country): The Fellowship is granted for a period of up to 3 years. Candidates will register for their PhD at any university in a developing country.
  • For a complete overview of eligible research interests please visit the icipe website: www.icipe.org. Go to RESEARCH and then drill down through the various research areas to see the individual projects. If you are interested in learning more about a research project for a potential ICIPE-TWAS Fellowship, please contact the Lilian Igweta, icipe Training Officer (see contact details below) who will put you in touch with the relevant scientist.
  • The programme envisages only one journey to the host country.
  • Icipe will provide a monthly stipend to cover living costs, food and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency. In addition, Fellowship awardees are entitled to subsidized accommodation.
  • The language of instruction for foreign scholars in icipe is English.

Eligibility
Applicants for the full-time postgraduate fellowships must:

  • be permanent residents in a developing country (other than Kenya);
  • be a maximum of between 35 and 40 years of age by 31 December in the year of application;
  • hold a university degree (minimum qualification is a Master’s degree);
  • provide evidence that s/he will return to their home country/country on completion of the fellowship;
  • not take up other assignments during the period of his/her fellowship;
  • be financially responsible for any accompanying family member;
  • have official acceptance at an eligible department, institution or laboratory at icipe.
  • not hold any temporary or permanent residency in Kenya or any developed country.

Applicants for sandwich postgraduate fellowships must:

  • be permanent residents in a developing country (other than Kenya);
  • hold a university degree (minimum qualification is a Master’s degree);
  • be registered PhD students in a developing country and provide a ‘Registration and No Objection Certificate’ from their home university;
  • have a letter of agreement of his/her supervisor in his/her home country and an acceptance letter at an eligible department, institution or laboratory of the icipe. Both the home and the host supervisors are obligated to collaborate, in order to accompany the development of the awardee’s research;
  • there is no age limit for these positions.
  • provide evidence of proficiency in English, if medium of education was not English;
  • provide evidence that s/he will return to her/his home country on completion of the fellowship;
  • not take up other assignments during the period of her/his fellowship;
  • be financially responsible for any accompanying family members,
  • not hold any temporary or permanent residency in Kenya or any developed country.

Submitting your application

  • The deadline for receipt of applications is 15 September of each year.
  • For sandwich fellowships (only if already registered for a PhD in the HOME country), applicants must ensure that the Vice-Chancellor or Registrar of the university sends a signed copy of the ‘Registration and No Objection Certificate’ on institutional headed paper to TWAS.
  • Registration at a university in Kenya is not the same as preliminary acceptance from ICIPE.  To be eligible you must have a preliminary acceptance letter from ICIPE.
  • Applicants should submit the acceptance letter from the chosen department/lab at ICIPE (ONLY) to TWAS when applying, or by the deadline at the latest. Without preliminary acceptance, the application will not be considered for selection.
  • Reference letters must be on letter-headed paper, SIGNED and sent as attachments via e-mail to TWAS and icipe. The subject line must contain ICIPE/PG/ and the candidate’s surname. N.B. Only signed reference letters can be accepted. The letters can be submitted either by the referee or by the applicant directly.
  • Applicants to the TWAS-icipe Postgraduate Fellowship Programme should send their application to TWAS only.

Applicants should be aware that they can apply for only one fellowship per year. With the exception of the VisitingScientists programme, all other fellowship programmes offered by TWAS are mutually exclusive.

NRF announces the 2016 call for proposal of the “Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Foreign Researchers”.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Foreign Researchers is designed to provide promising young foreign researchers
with opportunities to improve their kn

owledge and experience in the fields of science and technology,
while also conducting research activities in Korean universities and research laboratories.

Under the program, the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) grants fellowships to foreign researchers to carry out
work/research as a staff member in an approved work program relevant to his/her specialization under Korean advisors.

– Hold a Ph.D. degree and have some experiences in his/her field(science and technology).
※ The reciept of the degree should be no later than 25th may 2016(which is the deadline for this program).
– Be under the age of forty in the time for submitting the application(born after May 26, 1976).
– Be recommended by a nominating authority (Annex 3), in accordance with item 21 of the application form (Annex 1).
– Hold an invitation letter from a Korean Advisor in order to be recommended by the nominating authority.
– Have a good command of spoken and written English (or Korean language).
– Be in good health, both physically and mentally.

◎ The application must be submitted to NRF through the Korean host researcher.
Any applicant not recommended by the nominating authority and a Korean host researcher will not be accepted.

pplications are invited for Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship to provide educational opportunities to young postgraduate students. The Scholarship is open to citizens of all African countries.

The central purpose of The Mandela Rhodes Foundation is to build exceptional leadership capacity in Africa (whilst also seeking to foster better reconciliation and entrepreneurship) through its various

programmes and, to this end, aims to be the leading protagonist in Africa for such endeavours.

The Mandela Rhodes Scholarships are intended as a vehicle for the sustainable and practical expression of the aim to provide exceptional educational opportunities, develop a network of leaders, and thereby help to build leadership capacity in Africa.

Applicant must have excellent proficiency in oral and written English.

Course Level: Scholarship is available for pursuing to postgraduate study (Honours and Masters Degrees only at present) at any recognised South African institutions of higher education.

Study Subject: Scholarship is awarded in any field.

Scholarship Award: The Scholarship covers the cost of a Scholar as follows:
-Tuition and registration fees as set by the institution;
-A study materials allowance as set by the MRF;
-Accommodation and meal allowances as set by the MRF;

-Economy-class travel allowance for international Scholars only from the Scholar’s home to their institution at the beginning and back home at the end of their degree programme;

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for this scholarship:
-The Scholarship is open to citizens of all African countries
-The Scholarship is for postgraduate study at South African universities or tertiary institutions
-Full funding is for Honours (maximum one year) or Masters (up to a maximum of two years) or their equivalents (MBA’s excluded)
-Any individual who will be between the ages of 19 and 30 years at the time of taking up the Scholarship may apply
-Applicants must possess a first degree or its equivalent or must be in the process of completing one by 31 January 2017
-Applicants should have a history of well above average academic results
-Individuals that reflect in their character a commitment to the four principles of Education, Reconciliation, Leadership and Entrepreneurship
-The MRF leadership development activities sometimes include weekends. It is a condition of the Scholarship that attendance is compulsory.

CICOPS Scholarships for Developing Countries at University of Pavia, Italy

Each year the University of Pavia and the Institute for University Studies (EDiSU) offer 10 scholarships for visiting scholars for a period of stay of 4 to 12 weeks at the University of Pavia. The scholarships are available for both junior and senior members of universities in developing countries and members of major research centres and international organizations with specific in
terests in the field of development studies.

The Technical-Scientific Committee of CICOPS approved a scholarship project aimed at fostering research collaboration between academic from Developing Countries and the University of Pavia.

The University of Pavia is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Today, it offers a total of 89 degree courses, participates in International research projects and has established strong links with the world of business.

Applicants must have good knowledge of the English Language.

Course Level: Scholarships are dedicated to professors and researchers who wish to carry out research with a professor at the University of Pavia.

Study Subject(s): Scholarships are awarded in the field of development studies.

Scholarship Award: Scholarship includes travel (economy class), board and lodging expenses and a pocket money of 150.00 Euro (gross) per week.

Eligibility:
-The scholarships were designed for junior and senior members of universities in developing countries or members of major research centres and international organizations with specific interests in the field of development studies.
-Applicants must have either two years of either teaching experience or activity in international organisations and institution.
-CICOPS scholarships are foreseen for research collaboration in the short period (from 4 to 10 weeks) in order to encourage the mobility of researchers from developing countries and cannot be awarded in case of doctoral studies or enrollment in a Postgraduate course at an Italian University.

How to Apply: The students can apply online. Applications must be supported by a letter of invitation from a teacher of the University of Pavia, someone who would work with applicant on a joint research while in Pavia. Without a formal invitation from a professor of the University of Pavia their application will not be taken into consideration.
